Interview with the Heart & Soul Café Team
As part of the first chapter of Art That Gives Back, I wanted to introduce the people and vision behind Heart & Soul Café in their own words.
The following article is based on a conversation with their team, woven together with my own reflections.
When I launched Art That Gives Back, I knew I didn’t want it to become simply another donation initiative.
My hope is that it grows into a collection of stories—stories about people, places and communities that quietly make a difference every single day.
Every chapter begins with a place.
For me, that place is Heart & Soul Café in Heidelberg.
Over the past months, my paintings have found a temporary home on its walls. But long before I thought about making my first donation, I wanted to understand the story behind the people who had welcomed my work so generously.
So I asked them a few questions.
Where It All Began
Heart & Soul Café opened its doors on October 31st, 2015.
For nearly forty years, the building had been a bookstore before it was reimagined as a café serving both the local community and visitors to Heidelberg.
Today, Heart & Soul is run as a ministry of LIFE Church. But rather than creating another church building, they wanted to create something that naturally brings people together in everyday life.
When I asked about the idea behind the café, they shared something that beautifully summarizes their vision:
“Not everyone goes to church—but everyone goes to a café.”
That simple thought became the foundation of everything they built.
Rather than expecting people to come to them, they created a place where people naturally gather—over coffee, conversation and community.
Living the Vision
That vision continues to shape everything they do today.
As they shared with me:
“One of the biggest missions of the café is to be a place where people can feel the love of Christ in a tangible way.”
That philosophy isn’t just something they talk about—it shapes the way the café operates every day.
Their unique pay-what-you-want model ensures that everyone can enjoy a coffee, regardless of what they are able to contribute financially.
There is no judgment.
No expectation.
Only hospitality.
Sometimes the simplest acts of generosity have the greatest impact.
Heart & Soul is built on that belief.
More Than a Cup of Coffee
When I asked what atmosphere they hope people experience, the answer wasn’t about coffee.
It was about belonging.
The cozy living-room setting, the welcoming volunteers and the relaxed atmosphere all exist for one purpose:
To help every person feel at home.
As they beautifully describe it:
“A place where everyone can enjoy a great cup of coffee and truly feel they belong.”
Community is the heartbeat
Perhaps my favourite answer came when I asked about community.
Their response was immediate.
“Community is our heartbeat.”
Almost everyone serving at Heart & Soul is a volunteer.
People are there because they genuinely care about the people walking through the door.
Because the café isn’t driven solely by profit, they intentionally create space for conversations, relationships and connection.
Many guests return again and again—not only because of the coffee, but because they’ve found something much rarer:
A place where they feel known.
One team member shared something that perfectly captures that feeling:
“Every time I come to the café, whether for a shift or as a customer, I leave feeling so uplifted.”
Looking Ahead
As our conversation came to an end, I asked one final question:
What would continued support mean for the future of Heart & Soul?
Their answer was practical and hopeful.
This year, Heart & Soul has been given the opportunity to purchase the building that the café calls home. Securing the space would allow them to continue welcoming people, building community and carrying out their mission for many years to come.
To me, that’s what makes places like this so special.
They’re not only serving coffee today—they’re investing in something that can continue serving people tomorrow.
Why the First Chapter Begins Here
When I created Art That Gives Back, I made one commitment:
25% of every original painting I sell will support carefully selected people and projects that are making a meaningful difference.
Choosing where the very first donation would go wasn’t difficult.
Heart & Soul welcomed my work long before this initiative existed.
They trusted me with my exhibition.
They created a space where people could slow down, connect with my paintings and spend time with them.
More importantly, they embody values that deeply resonate with me: generosity, hospitality, community and creating a place where people feel they belong.
As a gesture of gratitude, 25% of the first original painting collected after the launch of Art That Gives Back will be donated directly to Heart & Soul Café.
Not because they asked.
But because gratitude deserves to come full circle.
This Is Only the Beginning
When I first imagined Art That Gives Back, I didn’t picture a single donation.
I pictured a growing collection of stories.
Stories about people, places and communities that remind us how much quiet acts of kindness can shape the world around us.
My hope is that every original painting not only finds a home, but also helps write one of those stories.
Heart & Soul Café is the first chapter.
Many more are still waiting to be written.

Looking back, I realise my exhibition wasn’t just about sharing my paintings—it was also about the people I met along the way.
